Hang Buom Street

300m-long Hang Buom Street was located in Ha Khau Ward (present-day Hoan Kiem District) near the junction of the To Lich and Red Rivers. Prior to 1945, the street was known by the French name “Rue des Voiles” but after 1954 its name was changed to Hang Buom Street.

In the past, different kinds of boat sails which were made from homemade canvas or rush were sold on the Street. It has also been the main residential place of the Chinese people since the 17th century.

Locates in the heart of ancient Ha Noi ward. This street once specialized in dealing in all kinds of sail sewed with cloth or woven with reed for boats. It was the most crowded with overseas Chinese communities. The number of Chinese people now living here is not a lot, however, the street still keep its appearance entirely crowded, together with many small restaurants.

The architecture of street changes least of other streets and Tuoi Tho preschool which was previously used to be Chinese’s club at 22 of street is the most typical case. Then, due to stressful relationship between Vietnam and China, Chinese gradually withdrew from Ha Noi.

There is a supernatural relic of Vietnamese left on this row of ancient street which is Bach Ma temple at number of 76. The Temple worships Long Do God who was one of the four important guardian gods of Thang Long Capital. The Temple was built facing the South-east with a triumphal arch, a resting hall, an altar in the first worshipping section and an altar in the middle worshipping section and harem.

Hang Buom became an infamous good-time street of opium dens, bars, restaurants, and theatres and later, cinemas. Little Sầm Công Alley, off Hàng Buồm (to the left), was a notorious red light district of brothels, two carved wooden peaches indicating brothels, hanging over many doors.

The saying went: “Hàng Buồm is a place of drunkenness – drunk in the morning, drunk in the afternoon, drunk in the evening, drunk all the time. “Reminiscent of its colorful past, one building facing Le Maquis Bar calls itself “The Cheeky Quarter.” Nestled amongst beauty and nail salons, tattoo and massage parlors, the Red Mask and Hà Nội Dramatic Theatre look as though they have died and passed on. With the passage of time, the character of the street has changed – families sitting in front of their shops look remarkably wholesome.

Today, many confectionaries have mushroomed on the street that has become busy and bustling around the clock./.

Hanoi Capital

Hanoi is located in the Red River Delta, in the center of North Vietnam. It is encompassed by Thai Nguyen, Vinh Phuc provinces to the north, Hoa Binh and Ha Nam to the south, Bac Giang, Bac Ninh and Hung Yen provinces to the east, Hoa Binh and Phu Tho to the west. Hanoi means “the hinterland between the rivers” (Ha: river, Noi: interior).

Hanoi’s territory is washed by the Red River (the portion of the Red River embracing Hanoi is approximately 40km long) and its tributaries, but there are some other rivers flowing through the capital, including Duong, Cau, Ca Lo, Day, Nhue, Tich, To Lich and Kim Nguu.

Hanoi’s natural conditions:

Covering an area of more than 918 square kilometers, Hanoi comprises two different topographical features: the delta and the Middle Region of the North. Most of the deltaic land lies on both sides of the Red River and its tributaries (Đuong, Đay, rivers, etc.). The Middle Region comprises Soc Son district and a portion of Đong Anh district, a prolongation of the Tam Đao mountainous mass stretching towards the Delta which is 7-10 meters or sometimes even hundreds of meters above the sea level.

In Hanoi region, the chain of Soc Son (Soc Mount) is a prolongation of the mountainous mass of Tam Đao, which culminates at a height of 308 meters. This chain has different appellations: Ma Mount, or Temple (Đen) Mount (because there is a temple on the summit of the mountain, called Soc Temple, at the place of which Giong Genius was deified, rising to the sky on his iron horse), or Ve Linh Mount. Soc Mount is situated in the commune of Phu Linh, Soc Son district.

Besides these Hanoi has other hills and mountains rising above the flat ground: Sai Mount (Thuy Lam commune, Đong Anh district), Phuc Tuong Mount (Co Bi commune, Gia Lam district) and at the center of Hanoi, above the area of the old Botanical Garden stands the Nung Mount, also called Long Đo or Khan Mount, giving more picturesqueness to the configuration of Thang Long

Many rivers flow through Hanoi. The first, is the 1,183km long Red River flowing from its source in China’s Yunnan. The section flowing through Hanoi from Đong Anh district to Thanh Tri district is 40km long. The Đuong, the second largest river in Hanoi, separates from the Red River at Xuan Canh (Xuan Canh commune, Đong Anh) then flows through Ngoc Thuy and Yan Thuong communes then cuts the National Highway 1A at the Đuong bridge before passing through the territory of Ha Bac province to empty itself into the Thai Binh River.

Hanoi region, lying in a plain, far form sea, belongs to the hot climatic zone under the influence of the South and Northeast monsoons. Winter is cold and dry and from February to March, drizzles and the Northeast monsoon are frequent. It is hot from April to June, but from July to September, there are heavy rains and floods followed by Autumn which is the most beautiful season in Hanoi. Annual average rainfall in Hanoi is 1,678 mm. Temperature in January is 160C, in June 280C (sometimes reaching 360 – 380C). This gives an annual temperature variation from 80C to 400C.

Hanoi has enjoyed many favorable conditions since long ago, since the day when King Ly Thai To decided to transfer his capital from Hoa Lu (Ninh Binh) to Dai La which became the capital Thang Long in the month of July of the Year Canh Tuat (1010), by Royal Edict on the transfer of the capital. So, Ly Thai To was both the founder of the Ly Dynasty (1010 -1225) and that of Thang Long – Hanoi.

In 1999, Hanoi had 2,711,600 inhabitants including the central area and the suburbs. In the suburban districts and also a portion of Tay Ho district, most of inhabitants are natives of Hanoi, whereas in the districts of the central area, the inhabitants came from different parts of the country to earn their living or to work in government offices and have settled there. Hanoi inhabitants are essentially the Viet but we can also notice the presence of other ethnic groups.

Thanks to its geographical vantage point, Hanoi enjoys a favorable position as a domestic and external trading center. It is the hands and the minds of the laborious and creative Hanoians of the past and present that have made this city worthy of being the political, economic and cultural centre of the country, the capital of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam and one of the most attractive capitals in the world./.

Hang Ma Street

Hang Ma (Paper Offerings) Street has been one of Hanoi’s typically frenetic commercial areas since the medieval times. On the occasions of traditional festivities, the street becomes filled with sounds, colours and light, bearing the imprints of the spiritual life of Orientals.

Hang Ma Street is also known for its tube and gable-roofed houses typical of Hanoi. Tube houses were built long and thin with a storefront and the worshipping, producing and living space in the rear. Even in these tunnel-like houses, ancient Hanoians still managed to have some space for nature.

Starting from the intersection of Hang Duong Street and ending at Phung Hung Street, the 339m-long commercial street used to be part of Vinh Hanh and Yen Phu Villages, separated by To Lich River, of Tien Tuc Commune, Tho Xuong District. The river has been filled up, thus joining the two villages. Now part of Hang Ma Ward, near Sword Lake and Dong Xuan Market, of Hoan Kiem District, it is one of Hanoi’s 36 ancient streets. The street offers various commodities and is one of the favourite destinations of tourists, domestic and foreign as well.

The gable-roofed house includes the main floor plus an attic which has either a small door or round windows overlooking the street. The house has inclining tiles and an eave overhanging the street. The gable-roofed house is simply decorated with a three-step staircase, attractive lines and a curved roof.

Inhabitants of Hang Ma Street were the Tan Khai villagers who nowadays still earn a living by selling such paper decorations as paper flowers and lanterns as well as paper offerings including the Soil Genie hats and votive-paper gold./.
